I did a discover at a resort and the next year did a club med "certification." That "certification" allowed me to dive within 1 year at another club med without redoing the class although they did a pool checkout first. It was me, 1 other person and the instructor. He wasn't in the mood for the pool so we did it off the beach (t&c). Great instructor and I learned a ton. Of course he told me to go home and get a proper certification as there was still plenty more to learn. I did do one more trip to club med on their cert and finally my gf, now wife/buddy signed me up for a class back home. From my experience these discover courses can be safe, but as with any other course the instructor makes all the difference!

DSDs when done properly as per the standards are far from dangerous. Multiple DSDs adhering from the standards if anything might be a little safer as experience levels improve.

I came across a lot of repeat-repeat DSDers. The record was 2 people doing 8 DSDs each in the space of 12 days. The reason being the idiotic pricing meant it was cheaper doing that than doing OW.

Some people simply dont want to spend time in a classroom or pool and just want a heavily escorted shallow swim.

Exactly. Nothing wrong with that, not everyone wants to be a certified diver.

I like Justin Theroux. I worked with him in the theatre some years ago, and he's a smart guy, a great actor, and an o.k. screenwriter.

Obviously his mistake was grabbing an already-used cylinder. If he'd taken a class he'd know better. If I'm ever lucky enough to see him again, I'd tell him I hope he gives it another go, gets OW certified, and tries again.

Interesting connection. Fifty years ago, this might have been written-off as a cheap Hollywood publicity stunt by an over-zealous press agent. The obvious parallel to his character arc on 'The Leftovers" is mighty curious...Was it simply poor judgment, or...screenwriter karma ?

Obviously this thread is 2.5 years old. If you'd read the message highlighted in red and bold you'd know better.

People grab "already-used" cylinders all the time. That's why SPGs were invented.

Before SPG's we used a non submersible pressure gauge to check the tank pressure before we took it in the water. I still use them rather than hook up a reg set just to check tank pressure..
