Made two dives at the Catalina Dive Park on a beautiful day. Tide was extremely, rock-crawling, low. Not easy for gimpy divers. Water is still unseasonably warm but thermocline at 70 ft was pretty cold and very murky. Above 70 ft seemed to be 30-50 ft viz (classes in action might be a factor)...
Made two dives. Viz was outstanding on dive #1 until I got to 60ft and it got murky and noticeably much colder than the 70ish upper waters. Still diving 5ml, no hood or gloves. Kelp still gone. Again, like Tues., saw GSBs near deep end of Su jac on each dive. Same 2 fish...one is a real...
Made 2 dives October 3rd (friday)...water was warm shallow in low 70s..saw a couple small yellowtails upon entering water. Thermocline at about 50ft dropped temp to low 60s. Viz wasn't great with particulates and strong surge maybe making it 30ish. The Park's kelp has mostly died off and that...
May 1 trip to Avalon. I was concerned the unusual Spring Santa Ana winds would ruin this pre-paid trip but they weren't a factor. (However, they had whipped up so powerfully the day before that breakers were bashing the harbor and divers had to be rescued from the Park !!!!) The day was hot...
Viz was surprisingly reduced from previously great status by a lot of suspended particulates. Maybe 10-12 ft. Mostly calm with very infrequent set of waves. Once i had to cling hard in the tunnels. 60F water. Usual suspects. Lots of juvenile rays.
Did two dives yesterday...both were good ! Viz was 40-50ish and temps were 57 at depth to 59F near surface. Beautiful day. Days like that are why people in the Midwest and back East move here. Ran into Dr Bill, who directed me to piles of squid egg cases which I hadn't seen before...
My son and a friend dove the tunnel/trenches at Shaw's and encountered a sm leopard shark which had a foreign object entangled around its neck like a noose. (My gimpy back was acting up so I didn't go on this one.) They tried to catch the shark but it took off...nonetheless if you get a...
Blustery day but ocean wasn't too bad on trip over to Avalon. Rain here and there. I met very some nice divers/snorkelers who hailed from Nebraska but were living in S Cal...pretty excited to be diving kelp. The conditions were a little weird with milky and variable viz 30-50 ft. The surface...
The Park was beautiful today, esp in the morning. Viz was 60-80ft..maybe more in some places. Current pushing towards harbor on dive #1 1130am but on # 2 had seemingly reversed and colder murkier water moved in the deeper regions. Still, quite warm and viz really blue and clear for that...
The ferry from Newport hit some swells but not many people got sick. Gorgeous day with mild Santa Ana keeping it clear and Avalon was beautiful above and below water. The viz looked good at the docks and stayed good at the Park. Viz was very nice (40-60) and temps were 63 to 59 depending on...
Torpedo Ray Catalina Dive Park @ Casino Oct. 11th, 2013 - YouTube
Batraytwo - YouTube
Go Pro 2, no filter, reg dive light
A squid run...per Dr. Bill...attracted a bunch of Bat Rays and this Torpedo Ray. I'm still in rank newbie stage as a videographer but its fun with the GoPros.
I enjoyed a couple nice sun-dappled dives after a calm crossing to Avalon. The pattern of good viz in shallower (less than 50 ft) and poor viz with greener particulate water in the deeper, colder, waters is still in effect. Viz shallow was 50ish and it also quite warm. Nice forest effect in...
Casino Park Catalina..Wed Oct 2,2013
Did a pair of dives at the park on a mostly cloudy day. The viz on dive 1 was excellent and I encountered three bat rays and a torpedo ray out by the two small wrecks @ 55ft. Dive #2 was much murkier but saw more bat rays and encountered the Cardinalfish...
based on reports that viz was good I did a night dive at Shaw's..about 830pm. Surf was about knee high and viz was kind of dirty/particulate laden at first...maybe 8 ft but in the 'Slot' it picked up and the surge wasn't too bad in there either. The slot or trench or whatever was full of...
I made it over to the Park and found the catalina Divers Supply operation closed down. (I had called but phone just rang) I used Scuba Luv, who gave me great service to the point of picking me up and getting me supplied with tanks ASAP. Conditions were like last week...pretty good but not the...
CASINO POINT: Tuesday September 3rd 2013:
Conditions were pretty good and there were only a few divers in the water after the three day weekend. A moderate surge was present and some current running South ? , towards the harbor. Viz was 20-30-40 with some milkiness and particulates depending on...
Did 2 dives at the park. The coastal fog/clouds parted as we approached Catalina and we were entertained by a small pod of leaping dolphins. Once in the water, the viz was a disappointment...milky and particulate laden in many places. Had to make my way mostly by depth and feel to su jac...
Had my tanks hydro'd via my local dive shop, they passed and were stamped BUT then the same LDS required a visual on the tank before filling them ???!!! I questioned this and even pointed out that the hydro was a far more intense test of integrity than the clerk shining a light down the neck...
I play around with screen captures on my GP2 and find they help share the experience and are easy to e mail. I would be interested in any tips on improving this procedure and if new GP3 black would get better quality results and at what settings ? I realize this is anathema to standard u/w...
