Trip to Ft. Lauderdale Area and Keys-Need Advice

#1 Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. My husband just did a two-hour dive on the first reef, just south of Anglin Pier. 15 feet depth, some days 40 feet viz, some days 10 or so until you get to the reef. We have kayaked to second reef, at 30 feet depth. Third reef is 60 feet or so depth, more of a boat dive...

Florida Keys compared to other dive destinations

    Practising with new equipment

The three Es -- education / experience, equipment, environment. Change one, keep the others the same, to avoid task overloading. That way you have a pretty good idea which area to adjust when things get weird at 50 feet. And don't wind up hitting your head on the bottom of the boat while trying...

    Blue Heron Bridge Trolls

Airleron -- "Weekend before last when High Tide was around 1ish, by my guesstimate, there were 150 divers. That may not seem like a ton, but cram those into that area, and wow!" That's insane. What are the locals saying about this? Good for the retailers and restaurants, maybe, but what about...

"Open Water Diver Safe Cavern Dives" ???

The closest thing I do to cavern diving is Morrison Springs, which does have a few brief overheads. That said, I've heard that if you use your flashlight, you've penetrated too far.

    Ear advice

My husband won't dive without his Doc's Proplugs. He can usually get below the surface and back up again, but then he can't dive underwater again for the day, sometimes longer. And sometimes he can't even do that much without his ears hurting. He also wears a beanie or hood to keep the plugs in...

What is in your save-a-dive kit?

Mask case? No, no... our SAD kit is the same size as our reg bags. Okay, here we go... Side pocket 1 -- ziploc bags, two adjustable wrenches, some weird multi-tool Side pocket 2 -- two plastic magnifying sheets, good for checking the small stuff Inside mesh pocket -- fin straps, two with clips...

Do you dive with a snorkel!??

I use a snorkle on the surface while shore diving (duh...) I hate using up my tank air on the way out, but I'll use the second stage on the way back to shore in case I see something and want to follow it. Richard hasn't used a snorkle while diving since 2005. Just one more thing to get tangled...

    Hair Care when diving

The other day I forgot my beanie when doing a check-out dive, and I'm letting my bangs grow out so I look like a sheepdog. So I used my Buff headgear. I was worried that it would interfer with the mask strap or cause the mask to flood, but no problem. I hate to ruin a $22 tubular scarf, but it...

getting into a WET wet suit... aarrrgh!!!

Solution 1 -- cheap pantyhose. Eventually the feet get runs, but they stay in place better than footless tights. Solution 2 -- dry wetsuit, dry body. Damp wetsuit, damp body. I haven't tried the cream rinse method. Solution 3 -- inch the suit on from the ankles... the knee pads... the crotch...

    Lbts

We brought our fifth wheel trailer to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea many years ago. The hassle of broken meters or no parking spaces led us to research the many nice Mom-and-Pop hotels along the shoreline. The on-site free parking and short distance to the beach is definitely worth it. We enjoy Beach...

    Blue Heron Bridge Trolls

Question -- we did not make the annual Florida trip in 2011, but we are set to be at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea in July. Construction at Blue Heron Bridge? Did we miss that? And night dives via Force E? Is that a dive club thing, or open to the aspiring flatlander?

Lauderdale by the Sea shore dives

Richard has been out most mornings for the last two weeks on the "rubble field" off Datura's beach entrance. He's been photographing the usual suspects, plus this week he snapped a southern stingray at the field near the end of Anglin Pier. Today he finally got a picture of the smaller manta ray...

    Shark Bite LBTS

Richard has taken pictures of a southern stingray and a manta ray this week near the end of Anglin Pier, along with the yellow rays, nurse sharks, tarpon, barracuda, usual suspects... no worries. The nurse shark sounded mighty ungrateful, but I guess I'd be grumpy, too, if I was tangled in a net.

suggestions on how to get a person into diving

I will point out that my husband is lukewarm on swimming, could care less about beaches, but loves to dive. Once he's underwater with his camera, all is good. Swimming on the surface bothers him. He does it, but does not like it. So even diehard divers have issues. The gear is heavy -- use...

suggestions on how to get a person into diving

Your signature says you live in Florida, so that makes the introduction to underwater easier! As stated above, have her snorkel above you at a shallow water site. Visit on the surface, then she has fun topside while you have fun ten feet below. Got a camera? Take pictures of what you saw...

Lauderdale by the Sea shore dives

Richard and I are getting our check out dives at the local community college before heading to LBTS at the end of the month. We usually spend four to six weeks at one of the hotels down the road from Santa Barbara Inn, and also dive Datura Avenue beach outlet. Good diving! We usually gear up...

    Oil spill gear cleaning?

How exactly do I clean gear after swimming in the Gulf Coast oil spill? No, this is not a joke. No, I have no intention of doing it deliberately, but we will be heading down I-10 to Florida in a few weeks. If we did stop by Pensacola or another coastal area for a few dives, and we did have...
