    rib fracture

Having "survived" a few fractured ribs (including one broken by a fit of coughing, like you) I can attest to the ongoing care you need to take care of them. I don't know of any way to "splint" or otherwise protect them while they heal. My understanding is that the only think that holds the...

    AquaLung Legend LX

Haven't tried it myself, but I was talking with Aqualung and apparently they are split betweeen the Apeks and the Legend as to personal preferences. They do share some design and parts...

    Where to buy a spool??

Spool is like a spool for thread, but usually "flattter and fatter." You generally can deploy them with them spinning on a finger, and wind the line back on by hand Take a spool, add an axle, handle, locking mechanism, and line guide, and you get a reel -- more like a fishing reel kind of thing.

    RGBM Algorithm

I, for one, would greatly value the dessimination of this information in a more accessible format. My goal is to gain an understanding of the current thinking in models so that I can better use any commercial tools that take full advantage of the proper fitting of parameters to data and field...

    Custom drysuits

I have heard good things about Otter Bay in Monterey. http://otterbaysuits.com/ I think that there are advantages to being able to head down there and have the suit tailored as she makes it. You could even dive on the trip! I was all but ready to go there until I found an off-the-shelf...

    Timex Atlantis?

The big "50" there in the icons -- is that for "50 Meter" rating? If so, I'd imagine this to be a freediving watch...

Balanced vs Unbalanced: First and Second Stage Options

No bullseye needed -- I'm not pro or con DIR, though I feel it very important to understand the opinions and the thought processes behind them to make decisions appropriate for an individual's (or team's) situation. Thanks for adding to the wealth of information available here!

    RGBM Algorithm

...TDID seems to completely omit the equations of state required to track actual bubble volume, only talking about the constraint on the (scaled) number of bubbles. This results in the folded-Haldane method. Suunto has confirmed that this is the type of algorithm that they use. This method...

Balanced vs Unbalanced: First and Second Stage Options

I'm not sure I agree with all the conclusions about balanced vs. unbalanced, especially at recreational depths (less than 3-4 ATA of overpressure compared to a typical IP of about 10 ATA). I would think that the intermediate pressure would have to rise quite a bit to blow the valve open in a 1st...

2nd stage LP hoses - proprietary?

The hoses should be OK -- the Apeks issue is typically with a 1st stage/2nd stage package has a 1/2" thread on the 1st-stage end. Front covers are $16.50 MSRP, in black or yellow. It took me about two minutes to change them out. Just unscrew the cover (friction against the palm of your...

    dumb nitrox question

Sheesh -- I hope you need to take the test in a controlled setting, otherwise it seems as meaningful as a mail-order degree... Here in the SF Bay Area I know that you can take SSI classroom courses for about $85. One shop will even do your choice of SSI, PADI, or NAUI. I look at $85 as being...

    digicam/housing/strobe combo advice

If you hear of a housing for the C-7x0 -- LET ME KNOW!! I have a C-700 and love it. Alas, no housings to be found at any reasonable price.

    LP or DiveInn

Look for the combo on DiveInn where you can get the ATX200 and an AT40 octo. Also check simplyscuba.com for the ATX200. I seem to get packages faster from DiveInn than I do LeisurePro. Can't comment on returns/warranty on either so far :)

    regulators

For recreational diving, Sherwoods are ok. When I was learning, the mid-range models were just fine, though I certainly could tell the difference between the mid-priced Sherwood and a mid-priced AquaLung. If the Sherwoods feel good to you, go for it! Howeverm if you are interested in more...

Apex ATX200 with a Dacor Viper Octo???

Stick with the Apeks line for the second -- you only need to learn how to break-down and re-assemble one style of reg. Less thinking required in an "issue" situation. You can also carry one diaphragm on a trip if you believe that you may need spares.
