Lauderdale by the Sea at the end of Commercial Blvd has a nice beach access point just south of the pier. If you're looking for sea grass beds you can probably pull over at any of the side parking lots off Overseas HWY en route to Key West. Bahia Honda State Park has some ok shore snorkeling...
I am just throwing this one out here to see if anyone has had any luck with any accessories for the S70 such as the teleconverter lens or anything for the waterproof case. Any info about strobes or add-on lenses and where to get them would be helpful. Thanks!!!
Low volume masks are designed for free diving/apnea diving because the lower the internal mask volume, the less air you will have to blow OUT OF YOUR LUNGS to clear or equalize the mask, hence more bottom time. Plus most low volume masks have a lower profile and are more hydrodynamic. More...
Opinions about fins are like a*#holes... everyone's got them. I love my paddles and longblades just as much as the next guy loves his splits, so you need to figure that one out on your own. Some will say they have different utility but I know plenty of people who SCUBA with their longblades...
This is a good example of why you NEED to get to a dive shop and look at this stuff and try it on. The foot pockets of open heel fins are designed to be used with a boot unlike the more form fitting full foot fins (excuse the alliteration) that are designed to be comfortable on the foot and fit...
Don't forget, if you are getting open heels you need to get boots too!! I freedive and use an atomic subframe (black skirt w/ blue trim), omersub zoom snorkel, and cressi gara 3000ld fins with omersub 1.5 neoprene socks. My cressi spacefrog open heels are a little too stiff for freediving and...
I think you should buy what you like as long as it works. A lot of this stuff is personal preference but I would test the gear with the kids in the pool first. My dad came on a trip with me once and didn't test out his stuff and it ruined the whole trip (for him) b/c the snorkel's "dry"...
All I have to say is I wish I had your dive gear budget!!! My subframe leaks a bit too but blew it all on that mask. I guess instore fitting is not fail-safe!!
I just picked up the Atomic Subframe and love it. I got the black skirt even though I have used other black skirts with a claustrophopic feeling, but not with the subframe. The FOV is so good that I don't get that feeling at all. Relatively low volume too. Very soft silicone and very high...
Another vote here for the Atomic subframe!! I just picked one up last week in the Keys and I love it. Way better than my old Genesis panview and that had side windows. I guess it's good I lost that old thing!! Good luck.
I have the space frogs and wouldn't even think about diving them without boots, unless I wanted to attract sharks from the blood gushing from my feet!!
I would think a safe weight would be one at which you reach neutral bouyancy once you are at the depth you are going to be freediving to. Also depends on how lean you are (fat floats!!).
Search the forum for snorkeling/diving in the keys. I think you will get a lot of good info that way. But to quickly add to your list, I would include Sombrero Key in your list. I am thinking about heading down that way myself but gotta get the car ready first. Have fun!!
On the bright side of this post I have brainstormed a business idea. Want to hear it? Ok! I am moving to Bermuda and going to start a line of dive gear called...you guessed it... Posh!! I am calling the patent office right now!!!
Try using a large test tube cleaning brush or an aquarium filter downtube brush with your favorite cleaning material recommended in the other posts. I will not preach about anything that I am sure you have already learned about storing your gear so good luck!!
I saw the Favola the other day at my LDS and was thinking about getting it. Let me know what you think but it definately looks pretty nice. If you can breath through the snorkel comfortably than it is a good snorkel!! Some of the fancy dancy snorkels actually end up restricting the airway and...
