A lot has to do with the amount of breath one begins with. If you bolt holding a full breath, you stand a much greater change of over pressurizing your lungs than if you start with a 1/4 or 1/3 of a breath.
I do agree this incident sounds like it could have been an embolism, especially if...
The comment was made in response to my friend's reaction to the fact that they were only bringing a single tank each to the dive site, so I'm fairly certain it was about the number of dives.
As this is an accident analysis forum, unless I've misunderstood, the purpose is precisely to consider...
All valid points, and I very much hope my suspicions knowing the instructor personally are wrong. Perhaps a lesson we can already take away from this tragedy is that we should all be mindful when established practices are modified for whatever reason. Standards are established for a reason...
Agreed, but accident analysis has to consider the conditions surrounding the event in addition to the actual physiological causes. In this case, several "norms" weren't followed, from the apparent waving of standards by the certifying agency at the request of the instructor, to the changing of...
The instructor in this case has a long history of teaching classes at Dutch Springs. When I was at the shop, we'd be there every 2nd or 3rd weekend from late spring to late November teaching classes. If they make provisions for instructors to have access during the off-seasons, I'm sure he...
I assume so, but I'm not certain. During my 5 or so years at that shop, from my own initial training through DM, the pool sessions were always conducted at a local sports center and the open water sessions were all conducted at Dutch Springs in PA. I'll be very interested to know why this...
I was just about to submit a post on this incident, so I'll just add it to this thread instead to avoid multiple posts on the same subject...
I just learned of this a few hours ago from a friend who works at the dive shop owned by the instructor involved in the incident. I used to assist...
Hi guys, thanks for the compliments! About the image, I took about 50 or so shots as I swam the length, of which 36 or 38 were used to create the mosaic. Always better to have extra photos than not enough... They were stitched together manually in Photoshop. I've tried the automated programs...
Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd post a few photos from a trip to the Bahamas for a little feedback. These are from dives on and around the island of Eleuthera. I had previously been to Grand Bahama, but found the diving so-so and the island too touristy. Eleuthera was just the opposite, in...
Can you post a photo of your housing? if you still wanted to be able to use the flash (to trigger an external strobe) just covering it up won't work. You just need to isolate the lens from the rest of the housing. Most I've seen have a black rubber tube surrounding the extended lens. Seeing the...
If I'm really trying to save space, I'll pack the camera inside the housing with a small lens/port. I'll wrap the other ports in hand towels and just try to fit everything in a small carry on. Some day I'll just break down and buy a pelican case and be done with it.
After a dive vacation, I'll throw a couple of soft weights in my housing, fill a tub and let it soak for a few hours. I'll work all the knobs and buttons thoroughly, then rinse under a stream of fresh water, again, working all the knobs and buttons.
I wouldn't start taking buttons apart...
I'll be diving in the Bahamas during the last week of December, and from what I've read, water temps are typically in the mid to upper 70's. I'm thinking of picking up a DUI 30/30 dry suit because I get cold pretty quick.
