For me the major risk in diving solo or otherwise is technique or lack thereof.
The major risk is what's going on in your head ... just like it is when diving with a buddy.

Technique provides you the tools ... good decision-making and the ability to remain calm when faced with a problem determine how you'll use them.

Many dive accidents are the result of problems that are completely within the diver's ability to resolve, if they'd just use their brain better to either resolve the problem or avoid it altogether. This is true in all diving. The only difference with solo is that there's only one brain to rely on ...
