The name of the game these gentlemen were playing was not ice diving, it was Russian Roulette. Sometimes the two appear similar to those who don't ice dive, but in this case these guys came from the shallow end of the gene pool and there can be no doubt.
Ice diving holes form an equilateral triangular so that a diver can back into the 45 degree corner and use both arms to boost him/herself out of the water.
Note the blocks of ice from where these bozo's cut and removed the hole. Ice divers are more considerate of those who come after. They cut the triangle out in one large piece using chainsaws. This piece is shoved down beneath the surface of the water, and allowed to rest beneath the sheet of ice just to one side of the hole. After diving, this piece is repositioned in the hole and buckets of water are poured into the groove. This is so ice fishermen, children, snowmobilers, and others who may be out on the lake do not fall through the ice. The hole is marked with tape or dye, so that no one will approach it unaware that it is there. Overnight it should harden and thereafter it should be safe.
Rescues beneath the ice, like rescues in many places, are dangerous to the rescuers. These idiots placed themselves at risk, the general public (including kids who could be your kids) at risk, and law enforcement/fire rescue folks at risk. They represent the worst sort of diver who gives other divers bad reputations: untrained, ignorant, and unaware (perhaps) of their ignorance.
They should be confronted and counseled regarding their conduct. It is unconscionable to put others at risk through your own stupidity. This sport is not government regulated (yet) because it is supposed to be self-regulated. With friends such as these, we have no need of enemies. :doctor:
Forgive my rant.
