There are no cases confirmed yet where I live, but I am setting up today to start working from home. I won't be going where there are crowds for the foreseeable future. I wash hands and use sanitizer several times a day when I am out of the house. If I get this thing it won't be because I ignored the warnings because "the experts were wrong" about SARS and the Swine Flu.

The thing about prevention tactics is you often can't know if they worked or if they were a waste. You can't see the alternate reality where you mingled with crowds and got sick. But if all the cancellations and self-quarantining keep coronavirus from spreading, it will also keep other communicable diseases from spreading, too.

We will get back to our social events soon. If we can retain even some of the lessons learned from this outbreak about better cleaning and better hygiene, this could ultimately save thousands of lives every year going forward.

Plus, I'd like to think that some more folks will get their annual flu shots....but I fear they are mostly a lost cause.

And, as soon after 50 as possible get a shingles shot!

Like my flu shot, pneumonia vac, hepatitis vacs, polio and smallpox vacs, etc. I remember when polio and smallpox were active threats, went to school with kids crippled by polio. I'm a big fan of vaccines, other preventative measures, and herd immunities - thankful to not be exposed to cholera and many other diseases that killed many of my ancestors. We're going camping this week and the soap & water handwashing station is the first thing I set up.

Gawd, I hope so. I so wish people would support herd immunity with those. My granddaughter missed her vac this year, parents too busy to escort her, then came down with flu. Next year I am escorting them all to the pharmacy as needed on Halloween. My great-grandson had it too, but then their vacs aren't very effective. I would be devastated if we'd lost either of them.

The new Shingrix with 90% effectiveness, yeah. I didn't bother with the old one with 50% of working, but this one yes. Hard to find and you have to ensure you get both shots within the time frame, but get on all of the waiting lists. I have a preteen cousin who had shingles even. Her mom tells me that her doc won't order her Shingrix vac until she's older. I guess he knows more than I, but I'd get other opinions. Aren't kids getting Chicken Pox vacs now, and won't that prevent Shingles? Hope so.

I got the old shot, still got a very mild case, just skin irritation with no external presentation, took some anti virals and went to Bonaire. I credit the mildness to the vaccine so glad I went for it.

I guess we are supposed to be taking the announcements as instructions to shelter in place instead of boarding planes. I have a 2,000 mile road trip starting as soon as the fog lifts in the morning, but no crowds, no ships, no planes - camping with family but in my private tent, touring Texas, visiting cemeteries, courthouses (outside viewing only), and historical sites - alone. I guess that I am fine.

Really?

You know I grew up on Europe, studied there, worked and lived a half year in China as a student, traveled a bit, saw a lot , live in the US about 30 years now, seen a bit...
I am only reasonably smart, far from a being a know it all and far from having a solution for everything. It would be smarter to say nothing, but I don't have it in me in this case. Maybe I am also reasonably dumb. So I say this:

That kind of reasoning and argumentation is to be found everywhere. By far not with all people, but everywhere. Wide distribution might not be a valid indicator for correctness. But heck what do I know. Not much, but I do know this:

I fear the spread of this sort of generalized thinking and justification not more than the spread of all viruses, but certainly more than many, including what causes COVID-19.

That's all I am going to say.

Enjoy.
Going camping in a week as well (and river paddling).

We called the 1918 Pandemic the "Spanish Flu" even tho it probably originated in Kansas. Politics interfered with the truth.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

this thread was reported to moderators for the tone it had taken. I have removed a pile of the worst, most off-topic, confrontational posts and any posts that quoted them in response. There are still a lot of off topic comments but they are at least polite or instructive. Please return to talking about good travel deals to Cozumel. As for me, I am planning to fly back to Canada while airlines are still flying. Marg, SB senior moderator
