Tracy, sorry, but that "world record" was for the sake of "show business", which differs massively from those who go deep just to go deep.

Show business provides jobs to many people, inspiration, etc. When people do scuba diving records, not many jobs are created, and most of them are temporary. Ultimately very few people manage to gain something, and when they do, the gain is personal or circumscribed into a tiny circle.

We are speaking about different beasts.

P.S. To be exhaustive, I believe there are better methods to inspire kids than "world records", for instance, competitions: baseball, soccer, football championships, etc. Or, for example, acrobatic motorbike competitions. Sometimes there will be some guys breaking world records, but again, the primary purpose is not the world record itself (in all fairness, it may also happen to break world records during scientific exploration, like the first men who walked on the moon).

P.P.S. You are challenging me a lot, which I like! But I am not an expert in anything, and I worry that we may discuss subjects that are well-known by experts with a naive approach. For instance, I bet that psychologists have already studied the best way to inspire and motivate kids - and what I previously mentioned is probably far from their conclusions, if they exist. So, just be aware of my lack of competencies :)

I'm from Vis island, we have like 3 dive spots shallower than 40 meters. But in the law it clearly states that you are not allowed to do tourist (or recreational dives) bellow 40m. Everyone ignores it, including the ministry inspectors but it's there due to a number of deep air incidents in the 80s.
Croatia is popular for GUE Tec1 classes. However I don’t know the minimum depth requirement, if any, for Tec1.

I need to go there for a diving holiday someday …

I'm not sure what defines a "tourist dive", but are you implying that it would be better to allow recreational diving past 40m? Or does it also apply to trained tech divers?

plenty of saturation commercial divers. Maybe @Akimbo can explain more, and say if I’m wrong.

Welding pipelines in the 1000'/300M range has been done but there hasn't been much recently. Most saturation work is in the 165-800' range but some work comes up occasionally in the 1000' range.

Most new sat systems are build for 1200'/350M range. We were building for 1650'/500M in the late 1970s and 80s but ROVs have largely made divers working in that deep unprofitable except for very specialized unplanned work.

I read that there is a large proposed gas pipeline in the North Sea that might require welds that deep but I suspect they will change the route so welds won't have to be so deep. Of course the capability is maintained for emergency repairs.

I went to 500' a couple of years ago. It had nothing to do with ego. It had nothing to do with pretty stuff. It had nothing to do with any mission that most people would ever consider, but there was a valid reason to go

I dropped one of those "American" double eagle collectors coins that are clad in .99999% pure gold and are genuine Cook Islands or Liberian currency myself.

6m on the platform?

People are different - the kind of people that strive to achieve and excel ( AKA as Type 'A' personality) are not all ego maniacs -everyone has an ego, its what pushes us along and doesnt allow others to put us down and belittle us, its what causes us to be better divers and hopefully better members of society.

What the average person sees as extreme the high achievers see as normal. The belief that they have some sort of death wish is simply a matter of perception. Surely we can all remember back to our OW days when we couldn't conceive of a 60m dive on trimix. - fast forward a few years and its not that big of a mountain to climb. Over the passage of time our threshold expands, some larger than others.

Type A people doing 'extreme' dives dont just wake up in the morning and decide to do something on the edge of their ability -they build up, they train, they spend hours getting their gear configuration sorted. To the average it looks obsessive, driven, extreme, but to type A its what need to take place to achieve the goal, its normal.

As well as the technical aspects, dealing with and overcoming self doubt from the critics, the naysayers, the scoffers is just part of the inward journey, their stress threshold is not the same as yours, some see them as extreme, they may see you as average, lazy, timid, self limited by fear of the unknown.

Dont measure others by your own self imposed limitations. The people who go first have my utmost respect, we enjoy the benefits of diving technology because at some point some extreme diver with 'a death wish' tried it out. Or we enjoy gong down a tight cave restriction because someone was mentally ready to try it. Diving consumerism is poles apart from diving exploration, if you dont believe me try pushing a new cave or wreck penetration where nobody has been and see how you deal with your fear of the unknown -its all so easy to be a follower.
