why doesent anyone use Carabiner clips? the look much eaysier to use, although im not sure what material they are made out of for rusting porposes but the look so much eaysier than the anooying fiderly pull back clips...

Ack....Holy line traps. Carabiners can catch on all sorts of things and end up with you as a big tangled mess tied to the wreck by your own gear.

They're called suicide clips. Anything that can snap over a piece of line, shipwreck or other entanglement hazard without any involvement on your part is just asking for big time trouble underwater.

1. aluminum will sieze up in salt water renering them useless over time
2. for the most part they are too big
3. they become suicide clips too easily (meaning they can snap open and lock down without any interaction with them.

4. We do use them for salvage rigging sometimes but mostly steel shackles

People considering caribiners should read Deep Descent. I believe that one of the accidents on the Doria involved a severe entanglement directly caused by the use of caribiners. It took several dives to recover the body because it was so tied up in knots.

Soggy is correct. It is within the first few chapters of the book. I don't remember the guy's name, but he was a cave diving pioneer along with Billy Deans who had come up from FL to dive the Doria. The "suicide clips" led to his death (well, that and he penetrated the wreck when they had decided that they weren't going to on this first dive).

Great book BTW, I look forward to reading his other book on the Empress....

This unsolicited spam brought to you by Tech Diving Limited. Come on Joel - that's just poor taste. You know better. At no point did anyone ask where you can find the things. :06:

But if they did, they'd also discover that Nix Dog Collars has you handily beat...

And if they knew that Nix had TDL beat, they'd know that Home Depot has them for even cheaper. :D

Soggy:
No Home Depot I've ever been to has SS snaps. Lowes has a couple sizes, but they are pretty small.

Hmm...I could have sworn I've seen them there. Now I'll have to go and check.

OK, I have a crazy idea. I'm pretty sure this will get shot down and burn in flames, but I'll throw it out for your amusment none the less.

I'm new and I'm sure with practice I'll get better at thumbing open the bolt snaps with my numb fingers in my 5mm gloves whithout even looking. But for now it's a bit of a challenge sometimes. So I was thinking, could you make something like a small seat belt buckle? To open, you just have to press a big ol dumb button (no coordination required), and to close it's even simpler, just push the two ends together. It has the advantages of the suicide clip in ease of operation, but you don't have to worry about it getting hung up on anything. Well unless you're diving in a sunken seat belt factory. :)

OK, blast away! :m16:
