I met a fella down in Roatan, who kinda fell in love with a local Island dog. He paid for the vet work, and all the required shots and certs to fly it to the US. When he asked about getting it flown out, they told him you must travel with the checked dog! he cannnot have it shipped by itself, from what they told him. We figured it was because they could stash a bunch of drugs in the dog, then have it transported without an escort. Why else would they not allow you to ship a dog? come on! like someone said, don't expect logic to play into the equation.

If I had a say, you can bring them on my plane. Then use them against Mohamed when he pulls his 9mm that TSA missed. Better yet, pack em. Then when Mohamed stands up and pulls his 9mm, let him come to the cockpit. I can't have my manicure scissors anymore, but I still have my crash axe with the 6 inch spike and the sharp hatchett blade.

Oh, I'm sorry, am I being cynical?

Yeah i heard about your 'little crash axes' , thought quite amusing they take the nail clippers off you. Wouldn't it be better to let you keep the nail clippers and give you some training on how to cut through toilet doors etc using the nail clippers, much safer all round

One of my buddies at work was taking a sample "aqua gun" onto a plane...you know...the little hose nozzles you use for your flowers and washing your car. They pulled his carryon and removed the hose nozzle (it was plastic/metal) and held it up to him asking "what's this?". (Duh)...He says "it's an aqua gun"... "Sir...you are not allowed to use the word "gun" here". <sigh> He talked his way around it when he changed the description to "hoze nozzle". Idiots!

I little while I flew with all my scuba gear and had to take my 4lb tank weights on the carry on (don't ask why I even took them!)......when they scanned it they looked at the usual crap, laptop working, Palm/camera working, they made me open up my toiletry kit which had razors and moustache scissors in it - no problem. But then they came to the small nugget sized led strung up on a strap, they kinda freaked. Next thing I know I am standing there in my socks and pants being searched by 3 people and security guards are rushing to the x-ray machine. One I was able to get dressed, I was led to a little table where a dude, get this, with riot gear on and a 4ft set of tongs opens my bag and starts searching around in it - pulls out my weights.....I had to explain to them what it was, sorta give a Scuba 101, they let me 'carry on'. For this little parade, I had attracted 18 security guards and airport officials - what a joke!

Wow! Ahhhh................ Isn't riot gear for "riots"? Like in crowd control? Even if there was something in your bag alot of good that would have done! Nice to see that TSA money is being "well" spent in the name of better security.

FYI: you can't take them aboard a cruise ship, either. Been there, done that (accidentally!)

My buddy tells a funny story about a cruise hey took that was stopping in Cozumel. Shortly after boarding they paged him and a dozen other guys to security. They were all divers and they were confiscating their dive knives, to be returned when they got back to port after the cruise. My buddy's knife was a short blunt tip. They went to dinner that night on the ship and he got a steak. It came with a knife that was twice the size of his dive knife, sharper and pointed.

That story always cracks me up.

iPhone. iTypo. iApologize.

Technically, the answer is now yes you can, as long as the "blades" are 4" or shorter. Whether the tin-badged [-]brown[/-] blueshirt with whom you have to deal wants to call the entire length of the shears, or just the sharp part, the blade...is anybody's guess.

Probably the best way to get them anywhere is to pack them in a basic and friendly-looking first aid kit.

I've flown with shears in my carry on all to many countries with many airlines. The only time I've ever had them taken was leaving Tegucigalpa. Go figure.
