Nope. The Skype plugin has always been disabled.
I am becoming convinced that this is an issue with Java 7.
Meanwhile, I have downgraded back to FF 13 because frankly, a lot of add-ons are not compatible with 14. FF 15 is scheduled to come out Aug 28th and I may upgrade to that version because it addresses the memory issues that have plagued this browser.
It is not just Firefox. Windows 7 has a problem itself with hanging. Microsoft has long known about the problem and done nothing to fix it. If this was open source, it would have long been fixed. Vista was not great, but certianly much better in that respect than 7.
I did a lot of registry diving with Firefox that seemed to fix the memory problem somewhat. I even wrote registry parts in that made it work for a bit. It now lets me actually have two windows open and up to 600k in private memory before it starts hanging now. I knew there was a reason I kept resisting upgrading Java. As I have resisted upgrading Firefox. The memory problems started when I upgraded from FF7 to FF8. Happy to see that FF is finally addressing this issue.
