Matey....

Here's pictures of one i made earlier....

Same light engine - very simple and cheap collar for almost exact
fitting into an sl4/sl6.....

it consists of 1 R2 cree drop in light engine from dealextreme (AUD$12.00)
and a 1" headset spacer (AUD$3.00 from a bike shop)

hardly any work required - just sanding off of the Anodising from the ends of
the spacer to effect a better conduction path.

i use 4500mAh hour Nimh batteries - they do need to be
installed so that the +ve terminal connects the the middle contact
of the light engine (reverse of the markings on the sl4)

instand upgrade from 30 lumens of reddish light to 200 of bluish.
this is now well and truly good enough for a primary underwater,
and has a 4 hour burn time.

Actually Xenon SL4 is rated at 113 vs stock SL4 eLED at 116.

Thanks for the spacer tip! Is that 1 x 1/4"?

Got to use an eLED SL4 and my Xenon at the same time for ledge peering... LED is definitely superior and I'm looking forward to doing the conversion.

Matey -

there are many and varied sizes - i tried a few and ended up purchasing
a thing called a 1" spacer.

critical thing is an ID of less than 26mm and a depth of 6mm....
OD only needs to be less than 33....

Now it just might be me getting cynical in my old age,
but the lumen rating of the SL4 seems to have changed with the times.

I have both the xenon and the e-led....and they are rated at 33 and 38 respectively according to the boxes they came in.

I see now that the UK website has them rated at 113 and 116....
Hmmm...

(actually i agree with the latter assessment - they ain't all that weak in standard trim)

maybe the marketing guys cottoned on to losing sales to competitors.....

Just got my package from HK and installed it. Took a couple weeks to get.

DAMN that's bright! I haven't gotten the 1" spacer yet, but just bent the spring. I went with the R2. THe reflector is a bit smaller than stock, so it a little lopsided within the glass. Think spacer will work better, so I'll probably do it next time I change batteries. I had to reverse the battery order from stock.

It has a very hot center and a little more of a "halo" than the posted pics from the link. Maybe it will change a little with a collar instead of the spring.

Will give it a try on Saturday in some of the larger crevices. It may be adequate as a primary night light. Thanks guys!

Great to see this thread!
Just ordered 2 modules to try it out.

I've got my bulbs now but I can't seem to get it working.
I see that you guys reverse the order of the battery.
I can't seem to fit the batteries into the body of the torch in reverse order.
Did you guys do any more modifications?

Cool! I just ordered 2 of the Cree modules and spacers off of eBay - total cost $31 bucks to modify 2 SL4s - way better than $70 each for the official conversion.

I'll post again when I have all the parts and assemble it =)
