We are thinking about going to Curacao. We are pretty experienced divers (I've been diving since 1960). Want a resort that offers boat dives, good shore diving, OK food, and very cold beer. Any suggestions??

Thanks

Greg

Hi Greg,

There are two excellent all-inclusive dedicated dive resorts on Curacao that meet your desiderata:

Habitat Curacao http://www.habitatcuracaoresort.com/index.htm

Sunset Waters Beach Resort http://www.sunsetwaters.com/index.php

As regards Sunset Waters, here is a feature trip report I wrote for the Feb '05 issue of Undercurrent (http://www.undercurrent.org/):

Sunset Waters Curaçao--Even in the rain, it’s a blue sky experience.

I am thinking about Sunset Waters, Habitat or Lion's Dive as well, for a trip in March. Any opinions on how these compare? I like good food & cold beer as well.

One big difference between Lion's Dive and the others, is that Lion's dive is in a fairly built up area of accomodations and activities. The others are in more isolated areas, further from civilization, and IMO the dive sites they go or nearby are generally better.

Habitat restaurant isn't so great, ok for the breakfast buffet and the occasional burger is safe, decent BBQ night. Other than that I'd suggest renting a car if you stay there, only half hour to downtown and there are some places closer. Sunset Waters is AI and seems to get decent reviews for the food. It's been a long time since I stayed or ate at Lion's dive, but then food was good back then and if it's not you've got plenty of options. There are other things in walking distance and taking a taxi to town is reasonable (taking a taxi from Habitat or Sunset Waters is probably not something you'd want to do on a regular basis. Habitat has a shuttle, but the times are not convienient for eating dinner in town. Not sure about Sunset shuttle.)

The dive shop at Habitat is great. One of the less great things about Habitat is that they don't seem to maintain it, what used to be simple is now just looking ratty. The AC works and there's plenty of hot water. But the rooms are like a cheap motel, the grounds aren't maintained, and there's broken stuff all over the place. AFAIK Sunset Waters isn't exactly fancy either, but it's been too long since I've spent any time there to compare.

The Marriott has all of the above plus a great pool and swim up bar as well as onsite resturants (4 plus a casino) you can get all inclusive rates or pay as you go. I just came back from there and it was great.

I used my Marriott points.

Stayed at Lions Dive in feb. 06. No complaints on the resort (rooms, beach) good.
Food was good, we rented a car for the week and enjoyed resturants in town.

The dive op was good, the big thing to me was the dive sites we went to were marginal. We were the only dive boat on the sites and I can see why as it was pretty boring IMHO. Also it may have been due to our location that no other dive ops would come down that far.

If you get a chance hook up with The Dive Bus, these are the type of people who really make diving enjoyable. And they are very knowledgeable.

Again Lions is good, I would go somewhere else next visit.

Many people feel the best diving is on the western part of the island. Curacao is not a small island. "Town" is in the eastern half and a good 30 minute drive or more to the good western dive sites.

I like Habitat. It's not fancy, but IMHO it has good value.
