I like this, BUT have you ever seriously heard any discussion like this on a briefing before?
I only have about 300 dives and I rarely here ANY emergency recall protocall during the briefing. I always ask, and 9 times out of 10 is....We'll rev the engines above you really loudly! End of discussion, but at least I ask and hope most of the other divers here the response and will be able to connect the dots if that situation does happen.
I've only been on 1 boat that had an underwater microphone. Oddly, they usually only dive in 28' of water.

When things go to crap, they rarely go to crap on plan. The fact that you thought about it this much is probably enough to get you out of the Darwin crowd.

I don't do deco dives off boats which have emergency recall proceedures. Deco diving is done off boats that have proceedures in place to eliminate the recall in the first place - in this case that would have been a chase boat.

I'm still not sure how the current and missing the up line caused them to go into deco.

Exactly my thought as I read the OP.

They should have immediately done a controlled blue water ascent, with appropriate stops if needed. Sounded like they got into deco by trying to make it to the anchor/mooring while still at depth.

And, no spool on the SMB? :idk:

I think that makes it a safety sausage.

Safety Sausage.... Lol
Call me a pervert, or someone obsessed with sex, or both, but that term always reminds me of something pornographic.

Yes, but only the parts the divers needed to know. Pretty much #2, 5, and 7.

The rest was filled in from asking if they ever had to do it after observing the bolt-cutters and buoy on the bow. The answer to my question was "several times". The Captain is an old Navy friend that was on the Doria with me. He knows his business. No mention of extra fees though.

If enough people/customers ask, it will become the norm.

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D

So, if I come up some line some day, and the boat is gone (or I have a deco stop and hear a banging on the ladder), I should assume there was some emergency and just hang tight, trusting that the captain called in a mayday for another boat to pick us up, is that right?

"Blowng off the last few minutes of deco" doesn't sit well with me, as I would expect the boat's O2 to be in use with the original emergency already.

If I was dumb enough to go in to accidental deco, I would be doing the time, however, when the emergency recall was called, I would have shortened up and ascended. If I got up there after shortening my deco time and found out that two perfectly healthy divers were drifting on the surface..... I would have been seriously pissed.

If I were in a planned deco or a long deco time, I would finish it, and would have briefed this pre-descent. They can come back for me. I won't go anywhere. Promise.

We had 2 divers come off a deep wreck we have. The total diving was 10 and two let go and ripped down current. We all know this can happen on this wreck. They made their ascent as they went, we finished our dive. Everyone is briefed on the procedure. It took another 2 hours to complete the dive and get everyone out. Our captain knew exactly where to look. Downstream... (really, it ain't rocket science). We picked them up. Not a problem. We laughed at them for losing the wreck. Recall- not needed because Not an emergency.

On your dive, the captain and dm jumped the gun.

Jax, I've met you, and if yours really is bigger, it's seriously going to blow all those fantasies I had about you. And cause a few nightmares.
