Hi! I am looking into getting a digital SLR set-up and would like opinions. I cannot decide between the Canon Rebel or the Nikon D70 (or maybe even the D100). Anyone have experience with these models? Are there decent housings available? Strobes? Accessories? This will be my first UW camera and want to buy it right the first time and will use it frequently. Any tips on where to buy all this stuff at a reasonable price? Thanks

Between those 3 cameras, I believe the current model of choice is the D70. Even if you already have Nikon or Canon 35mm lenses, you would probably want different focal lengths for u/w. There's about a x1.5 change in focal length when a 35mm lens is used with a digital body. Several housings available for each model. Quite a few strobes, but some won't work with certain housings. It sort of depends on your budget.

Both camera (and corresponding lenses), like everything else, have pros and cons. There's no clear winner. You can't really go wrong with either. At this point in time I would probably choose the Nikon - the D70s memory card write time plays a big part for me.

See wetpixel, there are lots of DSLR posts there: http://www.wetpixel.com/PNphpBB2-viewforum-f-18-sid-d03ccba25c78b2c1fbaa3aba396c4787.phtml

I went through similar dilemma a few months ago and picked Nikon D70 over Canon mainly because I think that for underwater photography, Nikon has a few more variety of lenses to choose from than Canon, specifically the 70-180mm macro and the 12-24mm wide angle lens (I know that Sigma recently released a 12-24mm lens for Canon but I have not heard much about the quality or whether any housing manufacturer support that particular sigma lens.

If I had to buy again right now, it would have to be errrrr, the S2 again. :eyebrow:

Out of the Canon/Nikon's, my money would be on the D70, for the same reasons that ssra30 mentioned above.

D70 is the best thing going for the new buyer, in my opinion. If you already had an investment in Cannon lenses from film SLRs, then the Rebel would be the obvious choice.
