I am currently diving my way across south east asia (Thailand, Indonesia, maybe the Phillippines and/or Malayasia) and keeping my eye open for the best place (great diving, low cost, fun nightlife (least important of the three for me) to do my Divemaster training.

I just finished a four day visit to Koh Tao and an seriously considering a return in April/May to do my DM training.

I visited Asia-Divers, Big Blue, and Ban's while I was there and found the pricing to be about the same.

I'd love to hear from people who are, or have, done their Divemaster training on Koh Tao. Where do you train? What was your experience?

Any suggestions on accomodations and budgeting would also be greatly appreicated (I plan to spend 6-9 weeks).

Thank you!

I have no experience with DM training on Koh Tao, but I have done my IDC with Asia Divers and couple of guys did their DM there as well. I can say, that I had one of my best experiences with scuba courses. Everything was perfectly organized, quite intensive, yet fun and definitely my stay was rewarding.

I stayed in their resort, because I didn't want any hassle with morning walks/rides etc. Price was fine for me, as I shared room with a friend of mine.

As you mentioned Big Blue and Bans - I have talked to people working or plannig to work there and they also had great experience with them. Honestly I think, that all of these 3 companies are doing great job, so you won't go wrong with anyone.

Have you considered Pattaya? Best night life in the world.
Some shops even offer 1 week DM courses, that would leave you 5 - 8 weeks to fully enjoy the nightlife with your fellow dive proffesionals!!!!!
Apologies to those who dont like sarcasm.

I did my DM at Ban's. It is a big place but there are always instructors and other DMs available to help you out 1on1 if need be. Really great set up they have there and there are always a cool group of other DMTs to hang out with. You get free diving for life there as well!

They have great classroom sessions for the theory and don't just stick you in front of a video. The lectures are taught in a way that really helps your learn the information - not just past the test.

Their fishbowl bar is great at night too, and there are plenty of other bars/clubs within walking distance. There are some great long-term accommodation options within 30 seconds of the dive shop too. Also a great late-night pancake vendor "Best Pancakes!!" :)

I feel you will find most of the prices on Koh Tao will be round the same.
What you should be thinking about is the logistic which may incur more cost, and finding the best school for your needs.

I did my training at Buddha View. Fantastic group, lots of very experienced instructors.
They have a well organised divemaster program.

In suggestion for your accommodation, I would wait and spend the time on the island looking for what suits you and where you are doing your training.

There is no use staying on one end of the island when the school is on the other. This will incur more cost and time in travelling to and from. The last thing you want to be doing is trying to get back home late at night on a scooter when you have had a couple to drinks. Trust me I stayed in Mae Head and once spent the night in the country side after I missed a turn and hit a ditch. People have been known to disappear into some of the ditches. In the morning some wandering buddhist monk will make sure you are okay.

The night life round BV is fun. Granted you don't have nightclubs etc, but what you do have are some relaxing water side bars with lots of divers and dive professionals talking and socialising.

Have fun

I would agree with Marinediva. After working for several years in the industry around the world, I think the quality of divemaster and instructor education at Buddha View is the best I have seen. Really thorough, professional and fun courses. And I unfortunately, I still have not managed to get a full time job with them. Definately check them out before you make a decision.

That is unfortunate. But thank you for the praise!

Hi there !

I did my DM and Instructor training on Koh Tao and have lived and dived and worked all over the world since. Ive now returned to make Koh Tao my home. There are some 40 dive centres here so there is going to be something to suit you. You've been here before and already talked to some of the centres....why not just come back and do the same.....have a wander around and chat to the different centres but do keep in mind what you are looking for from your training and the type of environment that you want to learn in. Most centres can help you find somewhere to stay longterm too - so just get some budget accomm for a few nights and wander around before committing.

I wrote an article which was focussed on how to choose a dive centre to complete your open water course but the principals still apply to any course ....have a look ...
