I like to know how things work etc on anything I do from driving, photography, etc., as well as diving, and take time to understand the reasons if something goes wrong or doesn't work the way it should.

Jeni it might be worth looking at the PADI Equipment Specialist course provided the instructor is somebody who knows what they are talking about. That way you will learn how regulators work etc.

You can also read it all online too, but with a course you are tasked with learning to an established curriculum of sorts, and advice from a professional.
