Hi every one.
Just got a dive in today.
It has been 5 week since I have been under water.
We still had open water then.
My gills were drying out and I needed to resaturate them.
Here in Kingston we had a air temp of -8c. this afternoon, but not a cloud in the sky.
So I got the chain saw out and went down to the lake to check the ice.
Got my G.P.S. out, and walked out onto the ice, found my spot about 1000 feet from shore.
shoveled a inch of snow off of the ice, to reveal almost crystal clear ice.
Thinking to myself, man I hope that my blade on the saw was long enough.
To my surprize there was 15 inches.
Within 15 minutes I had a nice 4x6 foot hole, with 40 feet of water under it.
Visibilty was about 60 feet, pretty good for this time of year,
The area I had cut the hole is a great place for looking for old bottles.
Within 15 minutes I was rewarded with 2 old beer bottles and 3 hand blown bottles.
15 min. later the fish start showing up to check me out
Small mouth bass, lots of salamanders on the bottom, a group of 5 carp, 1 about 30 pounds. Yea a nice one. also 2 sheepshead that stayed with me for the next 10 minutes.
total bottom time 45 min., water temp 33f., max depth 42 feet.
Way cool dive!
So much that ,now the hole is cut I will be going back next saturday.
If anyone is in the area next saturday
"The more the merrier!"

Hi every one.

Holy crap!! I hope you were diving dry. Even though I am proud to be a Canadian and brag about the cold, etc. I haven't ever got the desire to ice dive. Way to go.

Good luck next week - temps look like they should stay about the same.

Hi Jason
Yes I am in a dry suit
Once you go dry, you don't go back
Not in Canada anyway, lol.
Weather looks good for saturday.
I will be at the pump house museum around noon
You are more than welcome to come down and have a look.

Jason,

Great story, but I'm at an age where I'm not sure about solo diving under ice. What were your precautions?

Thought about the dive today. I even looked at the drysuit that has been hanging in my basement for the last 6 months.

Instead I dropped the reg for my pony at NTD for a servicing.

Thanks for the offer.

Good Story! I miss bottle hunting out east - you ever tried the St.Clair down by Sarnia? good bottle diving there. Solo Ice Dive - very nice!

Hi again

Hey pharmguy!
You missed another great dive.
Vis. was not as good as the weekend before but still great.
Water temp. was the same.
Not as many fish as last time.
Found a few more bottles.
got 35 minutes bottom time.
Will be in the same place next weekend.
Am also thinking of the Stacked hulls or the Munson, now that the ice is back again in that location.
Hope you got your regs back, and that they work well.
If you want to dive this weekend let me know.

Hey John
My precautions
Back-up, back-up, back-up!
I have set of twins with isolation manifold
Also carry a stage bottle
I shovel the snow off the ice in a spoke pattern from my hole.
I also have a line on the bottom, that is tied to the wreck, that I bring up to the hole, and tie to a stake in the ice.
I also maintain my own equipment, so I know that my regs will not fail.
Hope to see you on saturday.

Well, the water I was in last weekend was almost as cold, but I bet I had more current in the Clackamas River than you encountered under the ice (5-8 knots in the current).

Anyway, I appreciate your discussing your precautions, as there have been people who simply cut a hole in the ice and dived through it. The one instance on this board that I remember a few years ago was a fatality. That's why I wanted you to discuss it.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it up there with you next weekend. Enjoy the dive though.
