Okay, but what does "con" stand for?
Control? Sorry, I just accepted that some use that name for DM and never asked.

Yes.. it stands for "Dive Control Specialist" if I'm not mistaken. It's the SSI version of a DiveMaster.

Well, I have decided NOT to continue with the shop.. no suprise there.

I have a shop some distance away.. that has good training. Although I think it's in part too late for hubby to get it though regular classes.

I sure wish Jim Lap taught classes in my state. I'm even toying taking a family trip to FL next summer for continuing ed. Of course the kids think it's a great idea.

I'm going to look for a local instructor [hi Jim Ernst, up to the task] to give a family "Buddy Workshop" concentrating on buddy skills and drills. I don't care it's not a "regular class" but I think it is paramount if I'm going to let my kids venture out to dive with others. I really like the way Jim Lap structures his classes from the get go as a buddy team and as a real diver. I really wish more instructors did the same.

Way to go! I am not UTD member but from what I've managed to figure out their emphasis to team and responsibility to the team is a good thing.

Here's a short article for your kids to read ... it's one of several I wrote for the benefit of developing new divers ... NWGratefulDiver.com

He has obviously found a way to compensate for the fact that you know what the hell you are doing and he doesn't have a clue. Stop asking questions, you know the answer.

It will remain funny to him until someone gets hurt.

Sorry, DiveMom1. Way too hard on you. -your thread hit a nerve, I dive with family also.

.......... Hubby won't even dive with Rick anymore since he woudn't let him continue diving after they had to "rescue" him from himslef on the AOW deep dive. Rick put him on 02 and he was fine.. [after 30hrs] just ticked he was beached [for his own safety I might add] otherwise he'd have gone right back in despite the serious nature of the incident! ...............

So much for the "can't happen to me" argument.

I have not really put the kids in the middle here. The kids aren't really comfortable to comfront dad.. but aren't comfortable to dive with him either. Since these kids are all minors [and brought up to be respectful] they don't want to hurt or upset dad by not going diving with him. We ALL make a point of going over plans for our next dive [even a week or more in advance] and letting him hear what the planning is and should be. He just still thinks it's silly.

Our oldest would not hesitate for a heartbeat to jump into a dive with dad under the auspices of having fun. The younger ones were certified the same weekend my hubby tried to take the AOW class and shot up from 110' and laid on the beach on 02 for an hour. FRankly I didn't need to say anything to the kids, they came to me and asked if they could dive with me instead of dad. Of course they are more afraid something will happen to dad and they won't be able to handle it... I have both fears.

Obviously a family that cares for him, so why was he back on the boat while you were keeping watch as best you could? If it could happen to him, couldn't it happen to you also? This part is really hard for me to comprehend, again, apologies.

.........
To try to be a little polite, it sounds like your husband has a fairly strong ego and may, in fact, have some of his masculinity tied up in being in charge -- whether that is diving, driving, whatever. ...............

Pretty much what I got from reading this thread.

Being 3,000 miles away hardly qualifies me to comment, but on this rare occasion, here goes anyway.

As for the dive con:

When you choose to become a dive professional you assume a big professional, ethical, and moral responsibility for your charges.
If you are too gutless to stand up to a big ego, get out.

If you had a really good reason for your behavior, post it, and I'll apologize to you also.

DiveMom1, sounds like your new support group will be exactly what's needed, kudos to the local dive community. Most of all, brave of you to post. Very inspiring, next time I close the gap between my son and I, I'll think of your thread. -My wife doesn't dive, wouldn't think of pushing her to start. It's just not something she wants to do.

Stay safe.

Good for you! I'm glad you found the strength!
