7mil is the the best for our area, Dry is even better! A cheap way to go is to check with your LDS, and see if they have any rental gear for sale. My LDS sells off a little every fall as they replace with new.
 
Way to go newbie! Dive in right away and build your experience! Learn from your experiences and keep on diving. That's the way to do it.
