I had this done to me. Mask and reg ripped off from behind me. It was only instructor and myself.
While it sucked at that time, it gave me ease of mind that I will be able to deal with it when that happens (not if) again.

When I taught open water, we played a game on the last day of class.

All the students submerged. Last one to surface got a flashlight, custom logbook, pole spear, something.

The students did it in four feet of water. Take a mask, take a regulator, take a tank, turn off gas, didn’t matter. Last person to stand up won.

It builds confidence, it’s fun, and it’s in 4 feet of water. If they couldn’t do this drill, are they really safe to scuba dive? Not in my book.

FYI, everyone was always excited to play, No one ever asked to sit out and the competition was fierce.

*Edit*
The funny part is, they always wanted me to participate. I almost always refused. It wouldn’t be fair and I’d always be the winner.
