hydration - is drinking water enough?

I'm not saying your wrong, but I think a Doctor has a little more creditability then BoulderJohn and RiveRat.

This is an argument without a definitive conclusion that raged at our house for a few years as we used to have as good friends a Marketing Director for Gatorade and a couple of qualified Nutritional specialists (MDs).
The Gatorade director would produce all the Gatorade sponsored studies (lots) and the MDs would produce some publicly funded studies (a few) and they would get into some quite technical arguments, very little of which I understood.
Neither side ever convinced the other, which left me unconvinced. :wink:
 
Gatorade and sports drinks alike, have a definite advantage, but only in sports! These drinks are isotonic, which means they re-hydrate you faster, and when needed e.g at the end of a game, running into extra time!
Compared to just keeping you hydrated, water is just as good as anything.

Problems can develop when you feel thirsty, and instead of water, soda pop, coffee, or alcohol-containing beverages are taken. These beverages contain water, but they are actually dehydrating fluids. Not only do they eliminate the water contained in them, but they also cause you to lose further amounts of water from your body's reserves!
You statement that coffee and soda pop cause you to eliminate not only the water in them, but also further amounts of water from your body's reserves doesn't match up with my personal experience, nor with what Dr Deco has posted.

It's true. Caffeine is a diuretic, this is well known.

But your swimming, and doing a whole work out just as much as an athlete right?

Um... no. Diving is nowhere near the physical exertion of, say, running a marathon or playing a competetive game of basketball. If it is you're doing something very wrong.
