whenever we have to go from, say, the hotel to the pool, or, from the pool to the bar, we simply run in a serpentine fashion and constantly adjust our speed from fast to slow and back

Yes, it is far worse now.
Instead of a one-in-a-million chance of being a victim of a crime it has risen to one-and-a-half-in-a-million.......

What I find interesting is the Mexican Government's use of dogs and armed guards at the Cozumel airport to sniff for drugs coming in from the US. Is that completely nuts or what?

are you sure they are sniffing for drugs? could be something like cordite.
