I haven't seen snobbery either by vacationers, locals, or staff at our shop here in Nova Scotia. I have been in quite a few U.S. East & Gulf Coast shops and haven't seen it in any of those either. From what I read the snobbery is not a rarity though.
 
I was diving at my local spot that I enjoy a lot - a chilly reservoir with about 10 feet of visibility. As I walked into the water, I passed two women sitting at the water's edge with their children. I heard one of the women say, "Oh look! A scuba diver! I dated a scuba diver once. They're rich people who have nothing better to do."

She was right about one thing - I have nothing better to do than dive.
