According to the SDS page on FB, they are offering, as of today, the latest PADI specialty ...Lion fish Hunter which can be taken either as an Adventure or full certification.

Silly Diving Stories.

with all the rain and runoff we have had in Cali, I was going to submit a cert specialty for Mud Diver

Actually, SB member annieols recently posted in the forums that her Distinctive Specialty called Lionfish Awareness and Elimination had been approved by PADI. The link leads to the thread where she announced it and discusses it.

Yeah, people have been talking about it. Some important points:

1.) PADI approved it but didn't initiate it, so it's not a case of PADI initiating a new way to get your money.

2.) In Bonaire, which seems to be where this is being taught, it does not authorize you go carry an ELF, spear gun, etc..., and kill them yourself.

To me 2.) is the key. Get STINAPA to recognize the cert. as a license to carry an ELF and start nailing them, and I think I could get behind it.

Now we just need a thread where someone brings up the possibility of using this certification as one of the 5 specialties for PADI Master Diver...

Richard.

Wow, that's exactly what I was thinking someone would do!

Apparently, it is also being taught in Cozumel as well...

I have indeed had my Lionfish awarenees and elimination course approved by PADI. Although i am not at all sure why it would be considered a silly diving story. I also am a Shark awareness instructor, nobody laughs at that. I enthusiatcally teach underwater naturalist courses (and am learning even more from the Legendary Bonairian Naturalist Jerry). I took a whaleshark awareness course in Thailand while there that i really enjoyed (even though i didnt even see a whaleshark during the course dives).

Lionfish are an invasive species who cause serious damages to the Carribbean and Atlantic reefs which they inhabit. Some divers are aware of this problem already, and for those that are not, there is now a course they can take to learn more about the problem and about what they can do to help. It is not a joke, but a serious (and extremely fun) course.

The course is in its very beginning stages, and while the first couple courses have been incredibly successful I am willing to take any suggestions for improvment, or topics you would like covered, or questions you might have... And yes, you have to pay for it (which many SB posters object to for some reason), just as you would have to pay for any service provided or any dive led by a professional.

PADI is business. Specialty courses are income. Sometimes they even might be beneficial.

A few more ideas:

Cold weather diver (for icing ow conditions)
Hot & humid diver - dehydration specialist
Crab collector & cook diver
Fashion diver - seasons colors

It's kind of fun, but shouldn't diving be :D

So yeah, lion fish specialty course (or whatever) may be great fun for a holiday diver.
