you almost need a "bunny dive" site to cater to divers that can't pass a check out dive.

It's called German Channel...the part that is all sand. (Palau)

here on Oahu we take those divers to Ko-ko crater.

What I want to know about the IPIRBS, is does the "call" get answered? Anyone starting to have experiences reported with whether the signal is reliably recongnized and responded to?

I only know of one PLB that has a canister you can purchase for it: the McMurdo FastFind+. You can probably rig a water-tight container for a different one but I wanted to be extra sure that it wouldn't be damaged at depth given the importance of it working and its cost. It's positively bouyant with the small battery (and that's the only one that fits in the canister) and it's waterproof to, like, 10 feet. The canister even has a slot that's just the right size for a BCs tank strap.

Thanks Code Monkey.

After going through my own Drifting Deco saga in the South China Sea, I finally made up my mind to go ahead and purchase one of these:

Canister slides right onto your waistbelt; size is a little smaller and somewhat similar to an old Halcyon Proteus 3 Canister HID. . .

I'd definitely consider the FastFind plus over the FastFind. The 'plus' includes GPS and, I understand, that makes it quicker to find the water-logged diver.

Other than the ripping current at depth and the surface, the weather and sea state were absolutely calm with unlimited visibility when my Buddy and I surfaced --nearly One-Quarter-of-a-Mile away from the Mother Ship in a busy Shipping Channel. I'm never going to count on or assume such benign conditions again should I ever be in the same predicament. . .
