Hi all.

My boyfriend heard something on the CKNW news in Vancouver on May 21/2010. It said something about a diver drowning in (possibly) the Horseshoe Bay or West Van area. Does anyone have any info on this??

Diver died in Vancouver. Copied directly from a paper called "North Shore News".

A man died in an apparent diving accident near Horseshoe Bay on Friday night.

West Vancouver police officers, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene after another diver started yelling for help near Pasco Road at 10 p.m. His diving partner had not ascended with him and when the man did reach the surface he was unconscious.

A Coast Guard vessel and the Lower Mainland's Air 1 helicopter also converged on the spot just north of the ferry terminal.

The man was pulled into the Coast Guard boat and transferred to paramedics, but he could not be revived.

Although the cause of the death is unknown, it appears to be accidental and the investigation will be led by the B.C. Coroners service.

The man's name has not been released but he is believed to be in his late 30s.

Police retained the man's diving equipment to determine if a mechanical failure led to his drowning.

"We seize the equipment and then pass it along to a person familiar with this type of gear," said West Vancouver police Cpl. Jag Johal. "It could be a member of the Vancouver police marine services unit or the Coast Guard."

West Vancouver is home to some striking underwater scenery and wildlife, making it a popular destination for scuba divers and thus the setting for several accidents. As recently as March 31, emergency services were called to Ansell Point, close to the scene of Friday's accident, when a 29-year-old Vancouver man surfaced too quickly and suffered from decompression sickness, commonly known as the bends. He was taken to hospital via helicopter and later released.

In November of 2008, a 61-year-old instructor died during a dive lesson at Whytecliff Park. Later that same month a 20-year-old visitor from California made an emergency ascent when his mask started to leak.

Has there been any updates to the story? I wonder it the problem was mechanical, physical, or both...
