lots of good advice above, best from maxbottomtime and pasley - dive dive dive.

And the gear will change how much weight you need. I am heavier than you (235), and with my BP, STA, SS 80 and a 7 mil, I wear 4# on the belt. Total is (6 + 6 + 2 + 4) = 20. WHen i started beach diving with a BC and AL80 I was at 30#.

And a 2 piece 7 mil is 14 mil over your torso - that's a lot of rubber.

I don't find that I have to change my weight configuration based on the dive site. Malaga, Vets, Casino, it's all 4# on the belt.

Just dive as much as you can. You will get better and will drop weight (fitness certainly helps too)

...IMHO you are looking for an equipment solution to what is most likely an experience level problem...

...A simple, yet often overlooked point is that switching to a 6 pound back plate will remove 6 pounds of lead from your weight belt and change your trim. But it is still the same weight on your legs and to carry up and down the Malaga Cove hill. 6 Pounds of weight is still 6 pounds of weight, on you back or belt it makes no difference. Actually it does, ditch able weights can be ditched. What matters is what you weigh on the scales in full gear, because that is the weight you will have to schlep up the hill at the end.

This is wisdom for the ages, Pasley! Great observations - couldn't have said it better.

Although I rarely post any thread in this board. I do read it almost everyday so I feel like I know some of you here and I really value your opinion. My question is about surprisingly, BP and Wings. Now before you guys refer me to countless other threads about BP and Wings. This is SoCal related, somehow.

I was certified in Nov 2004. Weigh about 155 (165 back then)
Diving with a 7MM one-piece wetsuit and 2-3mm full body hood

I use a halcyon wing, SS BP (-6 lb) STA (*maybe* -1 lb) Steel 85 tank, canister light (supposedly -1 ish) and 8 pounds on the belt and that seems to work for me. add 4 more for AL80
