Well, the tongued buckle on the freediving belt basically cannot let go by accident, whereas the compression buckles we usually use certainly can.
 
I'm not a fan of weight belts, the loss of 5lbs can make for an uncomfortable ascent when underweighted. It's DIR to be as balanced as possible and not overweighted. Below should be a video link of a shallow diver losing their weight belt, it's never going to happen at a good time, Murphy's Law :)

One thing about the rubber belt with the tongued buckle: It's actually easy to remove purposefully. If you pull on the "excess" side, you can get the buckle undone with a flick. However, it'll never come undone accidentally. Same can't be said for the compression ones.
