I understand the test part, but if I got really sick and needed to be repatriated to Canada, I would have to pay out of my own pocket. Are you able to get comprehensive travel insurance in Germany?

Yes, we have various providers who also includes Covid-19 treatment, repatriation, hyperbaric chamber treatment, ... Sometimes you have to pay upfront, but that's why you've got a credit card. You also have insurances dealing with the full logistical nightmare you may facing and consulting with the specialists on site to evaluate your situation and advise best procedures.
But i am afraid they are not open for non-Germany residents...

I think there are at least 2 covering covid from Canada now....

I needed to be tested to board the Emirates plane. So, I was going to get tested the day before I flew out of Hawaii. I don't know if I would have made the 72 hour cut off for landing in Egypt, but you'd hope they'd notice that I'd been in transit all that time. I've given up on Egypt for now. That's on hold until April. I'm going to Cozumel on Saturday. :)

There will certainly be some kind of reality checks and pragmatic approachs in the next days. Egyp wants to let tourists in, so they will find solutions to long haul flights.
Egypt in April? sounds like we have the same schedule...

About finding yourself quarantined in Turkey (if tested on the airport) : I wouldn't be afraid of that if you have insurance coverage for COVID, they have quite good private hospitals, provided your insurance can cover the bill. The catch is, of course, that you won't be allowed to board the flight to Egypt if handed a positive result so you'd be looking (at best) to waiting for a second one (hopefully negative) in a clinic then making your way to Egypt on the next available flight.

In any case I'd expect the entire Red Sea tourist industry to start pressing their government particularly for the winter holiday season.

Not that I enjoy being the bearer of bad news, but...
I just found out that IATA and Egypt Air changed the information on validity of the PCR Test to be provided from 01.09.2020 from 72 h to 48 h.
FCO states 48 h as well. I guess German Foreign Office is busy with other things as they did not updated the information yet...
:eek::(

It’s going to be a photo finish.... if you need the test to be conducted ‘48 hours before arriving in Egypt; and my flight is 11 hours long....

apparently I’ve heard they will check the tests at check in, but that could still fall outside the 48 hours before you arrive in Cairo due to the length of the flight....

I guess we will see what happens :)

Yes, what a suspense....
It make sense that airlines check that passengers have got a test at boarding. Hopefully they will also check whether the test will still be valid at arrival...

super service from Egyptair again.( business class anyway) i just spoke to the airline station manager here in Toronto ( he's the dude who deals with anything airport related) he said that they are going to amend it 'within the next 72 hours' - 'back to 72 hours and it will be from time of result to time of departure of flight to Egypt'

so in essence you will need a negative test result where the result is no less than 72 hours before the time of flight departure.

Obviously they are getting a lot of panic about it. I expect the review will be somewhere in the middle... i.e. it will have to be 72 hours from test time to flight departure or 72 hours from result time to departure, but that may be less likely as some places are taking 7 days from test to result etc.
one thing he was adamant about, it will definitely be 'time of flight departure'
