Safe To Dive Sipadan?

I know it's been discussed at length but I'd like a recent update. Any more / less dangerous than it has been?

Would it be advisable to avoid the resorts on the islands such as Mabul and do day trips?

Second hand info but a friend was diving there last week and had a great time. Another friend was diving Sipidan last time there was shootings - both chose to stay on the SeaVentures Rig as its probably the ''hardest to target'' dive op in the area. Both had a great time and images from my friend taken last week show Sipidan/Mabul looking good.

Sadly enough, there were a few more kidnappings lately:

Four Malaysian crew members kidnapped by gunmen off Sabah coast

Two separate kidnapping incidents within the space of a week. They don't seem to be targeting tourists as much anymore, going for ship crews instead.

Stay at Seaventures Rig. Will be safe there. Polices will station there every night from 7pm - 7am. Sipadan is awesome.
