To restate...the S600 IS NOT worth the extra cash, the G250HP performs the same, less bubble interference, and is not as prone to free-flow.

BUT if your neck cannot burden the extra weight, or if you are afraid you will not look cool enough...by all means, pay more for the S600!

I wouldn't consider the purge button on any of the G250 regulators small. They are of adequate size and easy to hit, even with thick gloves. For the record, I don't recall using the purge button anyway...I just exhale to clear it. I do use it when doing OOG drills so the person doesn't have to clear it themselves.

I understand what ou have all said about the differences in the two. But I also know that I will not be worrying about strong currents in the Great lakes, and or the lake I live on. If I travel to an area that has currents, chances are I will be renting cause I flew their anyway.

Yes, the looks are important. I'm trying to get all matching gear and I wont buy a 400+ dollar reg and first stage setup and then think that an extra 50 or so bucks more is a big deal. This is totally a personal taste issue and really cannot be argued, simply put- If they perform the same in regular non-extreme diving conditions (ice diving), get the one that is visually more appealing to you, get what ever "floats your boat!"

I also know from what I was taught in my diving class, a large purge helps make your gear easier to use for you and your partner in an emergency. I'm not a specialists in this area and don't claim to be, but is some cases I believe that bigger is better. It is one less thing to think about if you need to clear your reg and have no air left in your lungs to purge it (for whatever reason). No fumbling for a button, if you push anywhere on the front of the reg it purges... sounds like a good thing to me.

But please understand that I'm new to diving, and hope you don't flame me for this. I'm trying to play it safe for my new diving partner and I (my little sister 19 yrs old). Anything I can do to make it easier for her to get air from me in an emergency I will try to accomplish. I agree with giving her my 1st and go to my second. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it would be better for my buddy and I to have equipment that is as simple and easy to operate as possible. (not to say we are idiots! Were booth actually very intelligent). Less room for error, at least till we get some dives under our belts and are somewhat comfortable with the water.

I'm purchasing a halcyon eclipse setup here as soon as my tax refund comes and a reg,1st stage, and octo. I believe I will be a dir diver (seems hands down to be the most logical, sensible, and safest diving standards). I see that scuba pro is highly regarded in dir configurations, and besides the purge button size dir is the other MAIN reason why I have so far come to concluded that the MK25/S600 is a wise buy... Not to be a thread pirate, but do you have any suggestions?. (positive criticism only please)

Good choices. Either a G250HP or an S600 would be a good choice. I have both, so it's hard to say which I like better. The Mk25 is great and so is the Mk16. As for the backup reg, an R190 or R380 (R390 now) are inexpensive and work well. (Make sure you stear clear of the local ScubaPro dealer here in Greenville.)
Everyone seems to like the DS4/ATX50 made by Apeks. I'm actually planning on getting a set of Apeks regs later on.

If you are looking at the S600 you should also take a look at the MK25/X650. The X650 has a larger exhaust, and it's less prone to free-flows in a heads down position (so you won't have to de-tune it). Very nice regulator. I moved my S600 to a yellow octo hose and made it my octopus! As an octo I can dial in a stiffer cracking pressure on the S600 to prevent free-flows while it just hangs on my BC, but if I have to use it (in an OOA or for training) dial it out to make it an easy breather again... the best of both worlds. I just ordered another x650 for my back-up rig and plan to turn it into the same setup. Granted ithe S600 is a little pricey to use for an octopus, but I already have the S600s, otherwise I would have purchased G250s and put them on yellow hoses... they're all good... just my $.02.

Who said the G250HP is hard to purge? I have both and believe me, if anyone has trouble operating the purge on a 250, then maybe they should look for another hobby.

As far as ice diving...I do not ice dive, but have had free-flow problems on my 600, NEVER had a free flow on the G250HP.

As far as DIR divers...I think the 250 is recommended over the 600 because you can take it apart easier should you have to clear it of debris while diving.

GOOD choice on the eclipse!

BTW have you checked out the poseidon extreme?

But if you are set on the 600, why ask what anyone thinks?
