I used to love watching Iron Chef, but it always bothered me that some chefs would use shark fins in the dishes they created, then one day one chef used both shark fin and whale tongue in a dish. I have not watched the show since.

You guys have my support in banning it, but I have a hard time believing it will work.

I am a Health Inspector for a municiple government. I inspect an Asian grocery store that sells dried shark fins for almost $250 per pound. The cans of shark fin soup are a little cheeper.

but it won't do anything to stop the practice.

education into measurable action

I've noticed that the more cartoon characters companies use, the more they have to hide. Starkist Tuna? et al....

think of all the fast food joints, cereals, gasoline companies (Shell showing ocean scenes? come on)

Link wouldn't work for me. I'll try back later. In the meantime I'll dig a little deeper on the host site.

I agree with cyklon_300 "Signed the petition...
but it won't do anything to stop the practice."

2nd and 3rd world governments don't enforce environmental regulations as well as Western and European countries. Unfortunately most govt. officials can be bought.

What will work is a little paranoia. Superstitious cultures thrive on rumor. Maybe a couple articles in local papers of shark fin soup seizure or tiny shrinking penis syndrome.
Or my fav SHARK AIDS !!!
Next time your on vacation in the Philipines or were ever tell your story about a friend of a friend who was on vacation and tried the local cuisine (shark whatever)
and returned home to find out he was impotent.

Since the sharks can't bite back it's our turn as top predator to protect the very few dinosaurs left from going extinct.
I promised my 5 & 7 year old boys that on thier 18th birthdays I'd take them on a GWSHARK dive expedition. And I plan on keeping my promise.

Tooth and (tooth) nail!!!

I hate shark finning so very, very much. Can't these people just take some Viagraa? What ISN'T an aphrodisiac in the Pacific Rim?
Normal foreplay...

But honestly, I don't think this is an aphrodisiac thing, it just a taste thing...

Ha ha, the enforcement problem relates to the western and european nations. The 2nd and 3rd world typically don't even HAVE regulations.

I've been scrutinizing the recent and highly applauded U.S. shark finning "ban" for NOAA's Pacific Fisheries Division. It's very sneaky. Vessels in U.S. federal waters can't engage in "finning activities", but can still catch sharks. The caveat is that they have to bring the carcasses into port for inspection. After that, they're free to remove fins and sell them.

Here, read for yourself:

A great deal of environmental legislation is ineffective via built-in loopholes like this. The public is rarely the wiser. Heck, even I didn't know about this. On the positive side, this sort of thing is something that the public can bring up with their legislators, and lobby to get fixed. Petitions and letter writing DO work for cases like this.

Shark finning ban, my butt...
