I am having an "interesting" time getting a dive centre to say I can get 2 days of permits for Sipidan around Jan 10. I've contacted a few and here is a response from Borneo divers:

"We wish to further elaborate to you on the proposed dive itinerary and how the quota system works as you might have known that our resort is given 14 quotas per day to enter Sipadan island.

Our resort is having 14 quotas at the moment to enter Sipadan island. (should there be any changes of our quota allotment , we shall notify you at once )Our resort maximum capacity is 60 pax house in 30 units of chalet. Under super peak period which is over 50 pax capacity, we are sure with every 5 days 4 nights package we are able to offer our guest 1 day diving experience in Sipadan which is normally 4 tank dives or we term it 4 boat dives with our professional dive master.

If during NON super peak period, you will be able to dive more than 1 day in Sipadan. This is how it works - If we have only 30 pax on location, our permit is 14 per day, with 2 days rotation, 14 x 2 days we actually able to bring all the guests to dive at Sipadan every 2 1/4 days during your 5 days 4 nights stay. Thus you have more than 1 day chance to dive at Sipadan or another word you will probably dive at Sipadan at 1 1/2 day or 2 days, this is all depend if you get the extra sipadan permit on which day of your trip, if you get the extra day in between than you will have 2 full days or 8 boat dives.

If you get the extra permit on the last night and check out the next day, you will do only maximum 2 boat dives with the second permit as you need to fly out the next noon. Unless otherwise you are not flying out instead overnight in Semporna or Tawau.

YOU NEED TO STAY 5 DAYS/4 NIGHTS FOR A GUARANTEED ONE ENTRY TO SIPADAN"

What can a guy do to increase the chances of getting 2 days of diving at Sipidan?? Getting to the place is tough enough, so not getting a second day would be disappointing.

MV Celebes Explorer represents the best option for maximizing the time you spend at Sipadan. Thanks to the high number of park diving permits that this boat has secured, you don't have to worry about whether or not you will make it to the most glamorous dive sites. You can relax knowing you will be doing plenty of dives around Sipadan Island. Choosing this liveaboard normally means that you can dive at Sipadan on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

Ask B/Divers to give you hints on which specific weeks they are not full. So far this year I have been staying on Mabul twice with them, end of feb, we were less than 14 guests, we could go everyday to Sipadan, in august midst of superpeak season, I went 3 times during a 7 nights stay.
.. and I am going back from dec 18th to dec 25th.

I would be quite confident that past dec 25th to jan 7th, there are lots of chances that the resort will not be full. Ask them.

OnTheSpot is right about Celebes Explorer diving around Sipadan 4 days a week which maximizes Sipadan dive time in peak season (but minimizes it in low season :shocked2:)... though you should realize is a LOB, which means you don't have the same comfort and freedom as at BD Mabul resort, also you won't be able to arrange your own sunset or night dives on Mabul housereefs, for me Mabul is as valuable as Sipadan. That's the trade off you must decide upon.

You do love Sipadan :) Three times in a year all the way from France !

I really do.

Duration of flights apart (flights are only a minor problem for me :cool2:), it's a very good solution for intensive high class diving on short holidays. Sipadan sounds like a LOB but it doesn't have the drawbacks so we can have family holidays with my non diving wife and daughter, and still great diving quality.

I like the way SEA blends in there : Filipino style dive guides, Indonesia dive quality, Malaysian level of accomodation... Singapore and Hongkong customers. :D (I'd only miss Thai food and massages... :) )

At the moment, only Billabong and Uncle Chang's say I can have 2 days of permits and one other day elsewhere. The other operators all say that one must dive at least 2 non-sipidan days (or some want 3) to match the 2 days of permits.

Are B'bong and Chang to be believed, or are they just telling me what I want to hear?

At least they're honest about your chances.

For quite a while it was "come here and dive Sipidan, don't worry, every day, we guarantee it!" Then when you arrived the truth would sink in.

All the best, James

I sure regret the dives I passed up when I was staying in a hut on the shore of Sipadan, when the ~11 other guests of Borneo Divers were the only other divers, and when you could slip in a late afternoon shore dive with a buddy and have the whole reef to yourselves.

Hello Vladimir, I'm having difficulty understanding your point. Were you shore based and wished you were on LOB, or was the shore diving very good and you wished you took more advantage, where were you staying? Any more concrete recommendations? Thank you for help. NAT
