Does anyone know who still makes spools that are machined from Delrin? It seems injection molding is the cheaper method and many manufacturers have moved that route.
 
for a spool, why does it matter?

keep in mind that delrin can't be recycled, the best they can do is put it in concrete for reinforcement, so when you machine out 90% of the material, it is quite wasteful. Combine that with the POM being really nasty for the environment to produce, it just seems very wasteful to mill out a spool.

Injection molding uses thermoplastics than can be fully recycled and wastes no material....

These ones are pretty stout, and at $20 for a pair of them with SS clips, how can you go wrong?
 
I just priced some delrin on grainger, Damn that's pricey stuff. 1ftx3in was near 50 dollars...
 
Delrin's great stuff for specific applications. A finger spool is a little ridiculous.
 
As a molded part they can incorporate a lot of strengthening geometry by machining the features once in the mold. That can make-up for a less robust material choice.

I like that the finger holes are chamfered and that the clipping holes are offset so theres always a hole at the perfect distance for clipping

One myth to be busted : actually molded delrin have more strength than machined one (charpy impact test) ASTM E23

explanation :

Delrin compound contains glass fibres .If plastic compound is correct moulded then these glass fibres are orientated in moulded space undamaged and in the full length.

If spool is cut out from moulded form then these fibres are orientated in moulding direction in rod . If we machine spool out of that rod then we cut these fibres and we broke interlacing of these fibres
so , we weaken the structure of the material.

Problem by moulding delrin is mold tool itself . It must be right designed : molten plastic has filled the mold from all sides at the same time before the start of plastic to solidify

AND

Spool from solid rod of delrin should be expensive

- that industrial plastic it is very expensive itself
- because it contains glass fibres ,machining tools have a lot of wear and tear
- cutting ( turning ) tool must be from artificial diamond (for serial production )
- there is a lot of waste from machining , but delrin is thermoplastic polymer material and could be recycled
