Good points so far, I'd say...
You never know when you might run into another out of air diver, solo or not
And most seem to agree that that the long hose is closer to the body.

This is no longer the DIR forum, but to borrow a page from that book, it makes sense to dive the same rig all the time. In a time of stress, one is not encumbered with any hesitation related to the variable of whether they have the short or long hose on this particular dive...
 
New Sherwood octos coming into the LDS -- time for me to get one, 5' hose :)
(it'll be set up "reverse", making for a cleaner donating reg. since I have the Shadow+ and pony for my own use)
