Hi All:

Scubapolly PM'd me in response to another thread about a "club" that might be a good example.

Peace...

Sounds great!! I don't currently belong to a dive club, but I'm looking for one...so I'll tell you what I am looking for. Depending on what types of folks you are hoping to attract, maybe this'll help...

I'm in the whole 'married with children' stage, so I'm hoping to find a dive club that has some 'family friendly' dive events where we can bring the kids and switch out childcare or something. DH and I would love to dive more often, but it can get expensive to pay for childcare or always hit up the Grandparents for help so we can do something fun. They're usually great, but it would be nice to have other options so we can save family for bigger favors...

Anyway, a lot depends on the type of folks you are looking to have. Another thought would be to try and make it attractive for non-diving family members/partners. My DH dives, but other spouses/SO's may not. Giving them something to do might make it easier for the 'diving-half' to attend...

Otherwise, I have no advice at all....new to this myself, but these are things I might look for...

Well, one way around the "babysitting" thing is to get the non-diving partners involved. Organise that the Non-diving partners get together at a different one's house every time and leave the kids with them. You can some DVD's or games for the kids and the non-diving partners can socialise while keeping an eye out for the kids. The other option is to get a babysitter for the club and pay her a fee from the clubs money...

Dear sucker4scuba

Well.........here is the deal, we are also about the start up of diving club here too,how about we organize dive trips between us, I mean I help you diving here in Red Sea, and the best cost possible, and you do the same for me.

Our last two activities that just ended are:
3 days wreck safari on Livaaboard with a cost of $210 per pax for the 3 days including open dives.
5 days diving in Dahad, 3 guided dives per day including transportation & hotel $280 for the 5 days.

Interest in putting our hands together email me : dinodinodino06@yahoo.com

This is a great idea. As soon as we are up and running I will get hold of you and we can organise something!!!

Cape Town Crusaders?
African Aqua Elite?
South African Seals? (You could have a dive flag with a seal peeking out from behind the flag)

I like!!!!

The South African Seals one is cool!!! In short "SAS" - SAS is also the acronim for "South African Ship" for the navy in South Africa which makes it even more applicable. As in SAS Drakensberg - One of our Navy war ships. I will definatly have that one as a surgestion at our first meeting!!!

Congratulations on your efforts to create a scuba divers club. I founded one with a few friends of mine. You can check out our website in my signature.

I would recommend you think about what you mean by a dive club. Do you want to start club that is social in nature and dives, or a club that dives and socializes during surface intervals? Many clubs have people pay dues and meet at a local restaurant to socialize and talk about diving. If providing a social environment is your goal, then this is not a bad way to go. However, if you want a club of serious divers, forgoe the meeting for pizza once a month to talk about somebody's dive to Cozumel.

A serious dive club should be about diving and facilitating people to go diving. It should have a framework for allowing members to meet each other and setup their own dives as well. I recommend having one official dive a month, publicize it heavily and see if you can get local dive shops to sponsor events, like raffles and games. It will take time to build, but your first event must be a success, if it is, then word of mouth will travel and more people will show up.

As for a name, how about Great White Divers, or Hope Divers, or Divers Hoping to Avoid Great Whites?

Thought about that, but given South Africa's history it could have unintended connotations.

Ren, that's a bit problematic. I have to admit it occured to me also.

Oh gee don't I feel really dumb now!!! I am a world history teacher! Yes, lots of bad connotations.
