In the old days (1969 or so), we used dolomite chips. Dolomite is essentially a very hard form of limestone and as such is harder than rust and much softer than steel. Also, being hard limestone, isn't toxic. We bought it from aquarium stores as the gravel of choice for salt water aquariums. Apparently, it keeps the PH correct. I still use dolomite as a tumbling media, even though I now have access to things like aluminum oxide and garnet. I just like the 'non toxic' and 'not too hard' properties. Bill.
