You may be better served to use a modern backplate - aluminum/stainless/plastic that's sold for tec rigs and only install a harness. You don't have to add a wing but you can easily add a pair of tank straps.

Little follow-up on this...

I spent Thursday night replacing all the webbing and hardware and used it this weekend at the Brewster hydroplane race. With my AL 40 pony it was super comfortable despite wearing it about 6 hours each day. At one point I did have to go in the water with it to help recover a driver who flipped his boat and to hook up said boat to the towline. Everything worked fine.

Later we did a line search for the canopy off that boat which was lost during the recovery and I discovered that I really can't dive without weights. Looked plenty funny trying though!
