What I did was head to Singapore (had a conference the following week) and joined a trip with Orpheus divers. We drove up to Kuantan and got on a liveaboard, the Beachboys.
It was OK, 4 to a cabin, with air con. TV and loads of DVDs. Lots of tanks so no problem on OC, and enough room to kit up and a decent rear deck for getting in and out. Actually my first proper warm water diving. I enjoyed it, it wasn't expensive, wasn't difficult. Not 5 star, but good enough.
