What did I have to overcome and what kept me from certifying before the tender age of 44?

All I had to do was get my three kids grown. NOW, I have time to dive!

I am always impressed when I see the parapalegics (and even a few quads) who dive here at Casino Point with one of the various disabled vets organizations. Heck, it's all I can do to flail around with four good limbs.

My only disability regarding diving is poverty... when I make my first million (robbing banks most likely), I plan to dive all seven continents (already have four).

Seriously, good luck with your diabetes... hoping you will achieve that dream.

A decreased bank account in the mid to latter 80's after getting 5(myself, wife, & eventually 3 kids certified & gear bought for all)----lol-----no internet cheap pricing available then---paid thru the proverbial nose-----

Having been certified at age 25, I can't really say I've had to overcome much of anything. I'd wanted to try SCUBA when I was in high school or perhaps before, but didn't have the money and didn't know anyone in the sport. It was one of those ideas that came and went a few times a year. I managed instead to get into skydiving... and I learned why credit cards are evil in the wrong hands.

When I did finally have the money to skydive, I was morbidly obese at 350lbs on a 5'8" frame. I did manage to bring my weight down over 100lbs and I'm still working on that today. Finally with a few extra $$ in my pocket every month, and being in good health, AND having a girlfriend who was certified just before we met, I took the class over this past winter and we have agreed not only do we want to dive for life, but we are going to get married UW =)

I have not had to overcome a damn thing. Reading threads like this makes me realize, no matter what little drama is going on in my head at any given time:

How lucky I am all the time.
How much of a sissy I am some of the time.
What true inspiration looks like.

One of these days I will get my HSA buddy certification, and work more people who inspire me.
You guys rock...
