Assuming open water and bottom is shallow enough to not worry about NDL.

My default is probably 3 to 5 ft (1-1.5m) above the bottom or feature tops (coral, rocks, etc.). But I'll move a lot closer if I'm looking at something or just feel like low-level flying. And maybe higher if I'm trying to get somewhere instead of looking for stuff. Definitely higher if I decide to use dolphin kicks or hard flutter kicks.

I'm basically crawling on the bottom looking for shells. I dive alone so don't care if I stir up anything. I do stay above any eel (sea) grass when it occurs.

Pretty close to the bottom sometimes when photographing some subjects but usually half to one meter above the substrate.

No flutter kicking even when solo diving.

This taken on a night dive near the Matahari Resort in Tulamben. I was in less than 2m of water as I was coming to the end of a dive when I saw the lion fish hunting prey. I guess I was half a meter above the lion fish.

Whatever distance you need to not stir up silt.

Well not always silt to stir up. This is me hovering just off the sea bed with lot's a manta swimming by..... South Lombok Indonesia
