What would you do with a J-valve?

You're given a tank with a J-valve. What do you do before the dive?

Just because you have a pressure gauge, what is wrong with also having a j-valve and setting the reserve? That way you will get a reminder if for some reason you get distracted and forget to look at your gauge. You can add an old Scubapro MK-VII regulator into the mix and have a three-level defense against running out of air. The MK-VII makes a loud "honking" sound when the air pressure drops to 300 psi. With all that going on, it would be virtually impossible to be surprised with an empty tank.
