At Leleiwi, a shore dive here on the Big Island, just outside of Hilo, back in 1976! Back in the days when BC's, Octos and even SPG's were not in common use . However, for the class all students were supplied with Calypso regs and SPG's, and "safety vests", which are similar to today's snorkeling vests. No wetsuits for the students unless they owned one (the dive shop did not have rental wetsuits). Brrrrr.

I did have a Calypso-J regulator and an SPG, so I was "high tech"

My three kids all did their 1st OW dives at Leleiwi this summer, with instruction from the same diveshop that I had trained at as a teenager in 1976.

Happy Diving!

way back in April 1998, Camp Cove (still a good site)

and gosh i was terrible... i like to think i have improved since then :D

January 1973, Horse Pastures, Newport Beach, CA - a vest, tanks, top/bottom (not farmerjohn) wetsuit, duck feet fins, no boots - this summer I will take my kids and wife to SoCal where I hope to do Casino Point and enjoy a day on Catalina with my not so dive happy family

Edge Falls, a sinkhole near Bergheim Texas in 1969.A double hose regulator, steel 72, and Voit fins.
I still use the kit. (except for the fins, they rotted)

The Breakwater in Monterey, Ca.

Memphrémagog lake in the Eastern Township in Québec. May 2001
It was cold, raining and very muddy in the bottom.

My OW certification was in Monterey CA. My first OW dive, not in a class, was in the Caribbean off the Island of Utila, Honduras.

My cert dives were at Fort Wetherill off the Rhode Island shore in April. BRRRRrrrr!!! :11:

My first post-cert open water dive was off Cape Ann in Massachusetts. Only slightly less brrr.

My wife dis her certs in a silty lagoon on Key Largo, and her first OW dive was there, too -- seas were running 3-5' "with the occasional OMG!"
