We used the Ripcord systems on the BC's for years with hard weights without issues, before Zeagle even started making their shaped weight pouches.
You should avoid using 1 # lead weight pouches as they may well fall through the bottom. I have never seen a 2# weight bag fall out. Perhaps a gromet was missed in the rigging.
The real purpose of the weight pouches is to make it easy to hand your weights up to the boat. When you unzip the weight pocket you can grab the strap handle, pull the weights out and hand them up while still wearing the BC.
I have seen tube socks filled with lead sinkers and then tied with a knot used long term by divers who already owned tube socks and lead sinkers.
