If it's heavy or valuable it goes in the carry on. Regs are both.

Sometimes TSA is weird about tools, sometimes not, better to check them.
Agreed. Never carry on any tool you would be upset about losing. I've had tiny allen wrenches take from for example. You never know, and arguing about it never helps.

True. My wife lost a tiny pair of grooming scissors in Aruba that previously traveled the Caribbean with no hassles. Ya never know.

I’ve been dive traveling for 20+ years including annual trips to Bonaire/Curaçao the last 10 years…my regs have always traveled in checked bags. Never had a problem other than a delayed bag now and then. If you’re going someplace without rental availability, then that’s a different story, but that involves more than just regs. I carry my prescription mask, DC, swimsuit, and a lycra skin in my carryon (plus hard soled booties if shore diving). I hate lugging more weight than necessary through airports. Guess I’ve been lucky. 😎

Same here, been traveling and checking everything in since late 80's without issues except two times luggage came a day or two late.

Thumbs down for removing hoses. Why risk the possible issues for no payback? SCUBA gear is all sorts of odds and ends I never had an issue packing up regs while assembled.

I think the whole stow/carry on debate hinges on the lost/delayed bag scenario and what your plan B looks like. This obviously gets a bit more complicated if you have a series of flights to far away places. Given what many of us experienced last winter with flight delays/cancellations and missing bags, I remain firm in belief that I will continue to carry regs, mask, computer in carry on.

I definitely understand that. You don’t want to have to dive a rental reg, not that the reg is too fragile for checked baggage, right? 👍😊

The other factor is weight. If you're packing light it matters less but carry on bags generally don't have a weight limit like checked bags do. When you're traveling with a rebreather, multiple bailout regulators, cameras, lights, plus supporting equipment trying to minimize overweight checked bags by jamming all the heavy stuff into one absurdly dense rolling carry on bag is a good strategy.

Lol @OTF … hey, in that scenario you do what you have to do. I don’t even take a camera anymore. 😊
