I'm a Fish!
A few years back I asked the DM if he had ever lost anyone. He said "nope, not in ten years". But then he looked at me and said "lots of people disappear every year". Everyone on the boat started to talk about two girls that were diving, got separated, and were never seen again. That was back in 07. Before my first trip to Coz my dive instructor told me to be careful. He said "lots of people disappear, they find them in Cuba". I said "alive" no dead. I don't really need to know, I'm just curious. How would you find something like that out? How many divers disappeared in 03,04,05..... Maybe know one has disappeared in the last few years, just curious if anyone knows the answer to this, and if it really happens a lot.

They're pulling your leg.

It would be hard to believe that lots of divers go missing every year. But its also hard to believe that the number is 0. I'm still curious what the number is 1,3,0?

I often go missing for a few months at a time but always return.

I am confused by the wording of the question, especially the Cuba part. When you say these people disappear, do you mean while diving or while on shore (kidnapped)? It's hard to believe a missing diver would show up in Cuba.

If you are talking about diving, I know two teachers from the school district in which I used to work disappeared on a dive off of Yucab Wall quite a few years ago. It was believed they got caught in a downdraft they could not swim against and did not take appropriate action.

I was once in some really moving currents on Barracuda Reef that would have been too much for a beginning diver and would have swept them off the reef, so it is possible.

I'm assuming someone looking for a missing person or
persons would contact the police on Cozumel at
some point. Maybe try them.

You may find some answers here.

Accidents and Incidents - ScubaBoard

But in general most accidents are not publicized much. As for the bodies ending up near Cuba that's quite possible based on where the current runs & other things I've read over the years.

You won't find an official report because this kind of news hurts tourism (same as diving deaths and crime on the island). The closest info you'll get is if a friend personally knew of an incident while in Coz on vacation. And the DM's, they know all the good stuff.
