Budget place to stay in Playa del Carmen

My wife and I also stayed at Casa De Gopala and liked it. I think it was $40 a night. There are quite a few small hotels in the same price range in Playa.

    DOT Stamp on Tanks

A friend of mine moved to the US from Germany. He brought his very nice Scubapro tanks with him, but the local dive shops won't fill them because they do not have a DOT stamp on them. Can someone help me out here? Does he have any options for getting these tanks up to code or are they useless...

Where to train - Mexico or Florida?

I also used Protec for my full cave cert. I did it all at once. I think it was fairly stressful, but the guys at Protec were great.

The first couple of shows were ok when they dove the Doria and U352. I think they're running out of mysteries.

Generally, I tip $5 per day (per diver). I usually tip daily as opposed to at the end of the trip because the DM/boat crew can change from day to day.

    Deep Blue

I was diving with Deep Blue just last week... A first rate operation... Sounds like the divers in the article didn't know what they were doing.

    Weight belt 'ditching' incident

IMO, some divers need to be more creative with their weighting... In this case, a five pound weight on a tank band would not only have reduced the amount of weight lost when the belt came loose, but would have put the diver in a horizontal position which, most likely, would have prevented the...

    New Divers and Dangling Equipment!!!

It appears the dive certifications are being dumbed down a bit. I just learned that my wife's OW instructor never taught dive tables at all. All the students used computers. I'm not sure which agency.

Split Fins in Strong Current and on Surface?

I think you can conclude that different fins work/don't work for different people. It can be difficult (and expensive) to find what works for you. -F

    Stainless backplate

It depends on your weighting situation. If you require a lot of weight (like when you dive dry), a SS plate is the way to go. If not a lot of weight is required (like when diving in warm water), you should choose an aluminum plate.
